I always feel that there are too many books to read to be stuck reading a bad one. If I reach page 50 and I’m still not engaged in the story there is a 85% chance I will drop the book like a hot potatoes (when ever I type potatoes I always hear Samwise (Sean Astin) saying it to Gollum in that condescending tone Samwise saved just for him. Is that just a me thing or do other people hear that too?). Here is a list of books that I loved and I hope you feel the same way.
- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett- This book has been my favorite book for about as long as I have been able to read. It’s about a young girl, Mary, that is orphaned and sent to live with her uncle. The story focuses on her self discovery and the healing powers of nature.
- Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh -If you have anxiety or depression or know someone who’s suffering from it, this book is a must read. Its not a difficult read length wise, and its a comic book so there are plenty of pictures to beak up the text. Brosh deals with these tough subjects in a funny and refreshing way. She mocks our societies understanding of mental health and how to help people suffering with these problems. Brosh started out making web comics and you can get a sample of her writing here where she talks about her depression.
- Bitten by Kelley Armstrong- This is the first book in The Woman of the Otherworld series. If you like werewolves and a kick ass heroine read this book! I can’t even count how many times I’ve read this book but if I had to guess it would be at least 13 times. Does it hold up to being read 13 times? Yes. Do the other books in this series hold up to being read 13 times? Nope, some I could barely read the first time but that’s only because the main character changes from book to book and I hated one of them. All the main characters live in the same world and interact with one another so you’re not just dumped into a random woman’s life at the start of each book. Regardless of the fact that I hated one of the books the series is worth the one flop.
